AU - Backdraft

Dita Ortiz had just put her 4-year-old daughter, Trinity Ortiz, to bed for the night and was trying to get their Brooklyn apartment straightened. She stifled a yawn as she started her dusting in the living room, smiling some as she passed along some photographs hanging on the living room wall: many of them were Trini that were taken since she was born, but some included photos of Dita and her husband Jean Carlos "Juice" of six years. Juice and Dita had met when they were attending Ithaca College; Juice was a junior majoring in Computer Science/EMT Certification and was a RB on the football team and she was a freshman planning to major in Art Education. The way they met: over a computer virus. Dita's laptop came down with a big virus and Carlos, or 'Juice' to the guys, came to the rescue. Over two hours later, the virus was gone and the two were already planning their first date.

Shortly after Dita graduated and got her first job as an elementary school art teacher in the Brooklyn public school district and Carlos went into firefighting, an interest that Dita didn't see coming at all. Regardless, Dita was proud of him.

Dita continued to look at the photos from their wedding and a few from his football days until she heard the foyer door open. She looked at her watch and smiled, Tao must be back from his poker game with the guys. "Carlos? You're home early..." She went back to picking up the apartment, gathering a few of Trini's toys in her arms.

"Eh, the guys were restless and so we quit early," he started helping herpick up, "I'd rather be here with you anyway."

He smiled and followed her through the apartment with her.

Dita quietly put the toys in the bins in Trini's closet without waking up the little girl sound asleep nearby. She went over and kissed Trinity gently on the forehead before covering her up a little more. She watched the little girl cling tightly to her beloved teddy that her grandpa Tig gave her.

She quietly crept out of the room and into the hallway. She smiled softly as she watched Juice lean down to kiss their daughter goodnight.

He followed dita back out to the living room and wrapped his arms around her waist. Her hair smelled of apple and her skin was soft. He knew she wasit and a thought had been nagging at his mind for months now.

"I wanna have another baby, Dee," he whispered as his lips brished the outer shell of her ear.

Dita blushed, turning to look at him to see if he was joking or not. She saw the serious tones in his eyes and knew then he wasn't kidding. She smiled softly, "Carlos, you complain about things being crazy as it is...I mean, just the other day you were complaining about how small our place was...now you want another baby?"

She wasn't protesting the thought. Hell, lord knows how she often thought about having another baby. She was just in shock by his revealation.

"We've been saving, we can get a bigger place," he ran his hands down her sides, "I don't care about the chaos, I want another baby, Dee."

He pulled her close and hummed their wedding song in her ear. Gently he swayed back and forth with her, turning in small circles in their living room.

"Please," he whispered.

Dita rested her head against his chest as they swayed, smiling as he perfectly hummed the slow acoustic version of "Punk Rock Princess" in her ear. She cuddled close to him, relishing his scent of Irish Spring and Old Spice.

She kissed the center of his chest before lightly whispering, "When you do things like this you make it impossible to say no to you."

He smiled, "That's my devilish plan, baby."

He lifted her up and walked her to the bedroom loving the sound of her laugh. Their room was dark, but he didn't care as he slid onto the bed beside her. He kissed her jaw and took off her shirt. Whispering that he loved her.

Dita smiled, gently taking his face into her hands to look into his eyes for a few minutes in silence. She nuzzled her her nose against his, "I love you too."

He ripped off her clothes and his, finally getting tired of being gentle. He nipped at her ears and pulled her hair as he thrust into her. His hands traveled over her torso and he nipped the skin around her belly button.

Dita moaned out, clutching at his full head of black hair as she matched his movements. She fought back crying out in effort to waking Trinity. She finally pulled his head up to hers by his hair, leaning into him and kissing him hard and full on the mouth, nipping his bottom lip as she stifled another soft cry.

He softly called out her name as he laid against her, needing them to touch as much as possible. His hands tangled in her hair and he pushed hard, knowing he wouldn't last longer but not wanting to leave Dita hanging. He let his tongue lazily trace the shell of her ear.

Dita pressed her forehead against his, her eyes remaining locked with his as she finally let go.

She didn't move away from him as she tried catching her breath. She lightly pressed her lips against his as she held onto him like he would simply disappear.

As he tumbled over the edge he crammed his lips against hers and moaned her name into her mouth. He collapsed on her and listened to her heartbeat as he drifted off to sleep tangled up in his wife's arms.

September 11th 4:30 A.M.

Dita woke up to the sound of her husband moving around their bedroom getting ready for work. She looked at the alarm on the nighttable before sitting up, she would have to get up soon anyway to get Trinity ready for school and herself ready for work. She yawned some as she shivered as the autumn coolness rushed over her still naked body. She reached over at the chair near her bed to grab her robe and slip it on.

Juice was in the kitchen packing a lunch in dark jeans and a dark blue NYFFD shirt. He her the gentle padding of Dita in the hall and turned as she entered the kitchen. Something about this morning felt different and his heart clenched in his chest at the beauty of his wife.

He leaned down and kissed her head, "Hey."

Dita smiled softly as she peeked in his lunchbox, reaching in to pull out the twinkies he packed and replacing it with an apple instead. "Better." She zipped up the lunchbag and kissed his lips gently, wishing he didn't have to leave her. "What time should we expect you home tonight?"

"Barring any emergencies, I should be home by 6," he smiled and hugged her, putting the twinkies in behind her back and grabbing hislunchbox, "I love you."

He turned and went out the door.

Noon

Dita had just released her last class for their morning lunch and decided to stay in her classroom during the hour break to finish up some grading.

She opened her lunchbox and grabbed her sandwich, finding one of her pink post-it notes plastered onto the sandwich. She smiled at her husband's clean handwriting:

"Dee,

Enjoy your time at work because you won't be able to forget tonight!

I love you, -J"

She chuckled and slipped the note into her desk drawer. Just as she closed the drawer, Principal Roosevelt entered the room; a grim look on his face. Dita's smile faultered as she looked at him blankly, "W-what...?"

He sighed, "Dita, you better turn on the t.v."

Dita blinked a few times before following his instructions. She stared in shock as her husband's photo came up on the screen. It was a photo of him shortly after he was promoted to First Lieuntenant. The headlines reported an attack on the towers and he was one of the people trapped. She shook her head in disbelief, "N-No...No! He's fine! There is a mistake."

She frantically dialed his cell, "Pick up, pick up, pick up...."

Her eyes remained locked on the screen and then next to her husband's photo appeared the image of her sister...also confirmed as trapped in the wreckage.

That's when everything went black.

Gemma was frantic as she raced into her daughter's classroom to find her sitting in her chair staring straight ahead. She knew how she felt. She grabbed her hand and spoke to her softly.

"Baby, Mommy's here. Opie and Dad are digging them out. Corrie used the radio, they're alive, baby, they're alive."

Tears rolled down her ashen face as she stared at the t.v., "Oh god...mom...we were trying to get pregnant...Corrie was going to be our children's godmother..."

"They're fine, they are. So many firefighters were lost, they are working so hard to get them out. They'll be fine," she kissed her daughter's knuckles.

Dita unlocked the door silently and let them inside the dark, quiet apartment. Her head was reeling from the day's events. Her mind was still wrapped around the thought of losing her sister or her husband or even both and how lucky she was that it didn't happen. She was still shaking as she set her keys down in the bowl by the door; her nerves shot.
