A Road At Night

Things went smoothly with Opie for a few months. They lived in his house, took care of his kids, she patched him up whenever he ran into trouble, and she tried to mend all the places he was broken. The only time they would fight was when Opie would drink and remember all the things Clay had done to him. Lately, because of the anniversary of Donna's death, he drank more and more. 

She tried to ignore it. when he went off on one of his rants she'd go out on her bike, the kids safely deposited with Mary. By the time she'd get back, he'd be asleep. He'd wake up in the morning, barely remembering what he'd don, and she acted like everything was fine. She'd known the issues she faced when she agreed to stay with him and she wasn't about to give up on him now. 

She had a bad feeling about tonight. It was the night Donna died and Clay had started texting her that morning, begging her to stay the night at his house. She could only imagine that meant Opie had been a terror all day.

Many of the guys stayed out of Opie's way that day; knowing that he was going to be temperamental. He spent a good part off the evening out at his old Nan's cabin drinking before heading home.

He entered the back door stumbling, alcohol setting in. He tripped over his boot, large frame falling to the ground, "Fuck!"

Knowing he was likely drunk she rushed out to help. He was sprawled out on the.floor so she kneeled down to help him.
"Are you okay?"

Opie gently shrugged her off, "I had to look at your murderous father all day, what do you think?"

She threw her hands up in the air, "I love you, Ope, but I'm not doing this tonight."

She stormed out to the garage and grabbed his helmet and his jacket, with his extra patch sewn to it, instead of her own, then jumped on her bike and drove off. Let him stew in his own hatred for a wile, she thought. She drove for hours on the open rode going as fast as she could. The road had been empty for hours until a set of bright lights pulled up behind her. At first, she thought it was a car being a jackass. When she realized it was a pair of bikes it pissed her off they'd ride her ass like that.

When she realized she was wearing Opie's leather with his extra patch she knew she was in trouble. She pushed the bike harder, going dangerous speeds. The two bikes kept pace and got along side her. It was two Mayans out on for a late night run. They smiled at her and began swerving towards her. The sound of her heart was louder than her bike. She knew this was it. She wasn't going to make it passed them.
After a few tense minutes, one of them clipped her back wheel sending her bike out of control and plunging her down a hill. When she landed everything hurt. She closed her eyes and let the dark envelop her.

Opie woke up, face pressed against the cold tile floor the next morning. Groaning, her struggled to get up. "Cor?" He looked around the silent kitchen before making his way around the house. Panic began to take over, "Cor?!"

He tried remembering what had happened that night: the drinking, the argument with Clay, then arguing with her...then blackness. He cringed at the thought of her being gone all night. Praying, he called Clay, hoping Clay or Gemma would confirm that she stayed with them that night.

Corrie woke that morning hurting everywhere and unable to move. She was pinned under her bike off a steep hill no one would be able to see from the road. Hoping it would help, she turned her cell on so it could be tracked.

Clay saw the number on his phone and grumbled before answering, "It's too early for this shit."

Opie frowned when he heard Clay's voice; having a sick feeling that Clay was not going to have good news for him, "Is she there? Did Corrie stay with you last night and don't lie to me."

Clay say straight up, "No, she wouldn't because of you. What happened?"

He was out of bed and on his computer before Poor could answer, "Her cell tracker.says she is off 225 just sitting there. Not moving." A sick feeling swept over him.

She laid there pulling her.legs out but by but. She.couldn't feel the pain, but attributed that to shock. When she finally got them out she knew.something was wrong. Across both shins we're angry red burns from the tail pipe of the.bike. Suddenly, despite the warm day and Opie's jacket, she began to shiver.

Opie shook with fear, finally breathing out, "Meet me there...please."

He hung up and went running out to the garage. He grabbed his helmet and was about to pull on his jacket but found it missing. Dread came over him as he thought of who might of took it. Corrie would ask to wear it sometimes, but he always said no; knowing it would be a target on her back.

"Fuck!"

Within moments, Opie was on his road toward 227.

Clay told Gemma where he was going and had her call Jax. He had no idea what had happened, but he knew it had to be bad. The ache in his hands was bothersome, but he didn't have time for a shot. As fast as he could go he moved over the pavement towards his daughter. He was closer than Opie. When he got there he looked all over, but couldn't find her, until he saw the skid marks that veered off the road and over the steep hill.

He peered over the side and saw the bike. Maybe a foot from it was Corrie. She seemed to be unconscious and her legs looked terrible. She'd had on jeans, knowing better than to go on a bike in anything less, but the material had melted into the wounds on her legs. He hated to think how long she laid under the bike. He immediately called the shop to send out the tow truck so they could get to her.

Opie arrived shortly after Clay, sobbing at the sight of Corrie. He tried moving the bike off of her and though he struggled, he was able to push it off. "Oh jesus... This is all my fault, all my fault..."

When Clay realized why Poor was sobbing he launched himself at him.
"You let her wear your patch?"

When Jack pulled up he had to rip Clay off his best friend.

Opie shook his head, frantic, "N-no! Never! She has asked, but the answer is always no!"

Jax yanked Clay off him and pushed him aside. Even though he hadn't really known Corrie well before she moved here that was still his family. She had accepted him completely, often watching his kids and being nice to Tara. The change she'd brought about in Opie, though it was only visible in small doses, was enough to ear her a place in his heart. While those two idiots were busy fighting each other, she was lying on the ground. He rushed to her, placing her head in his lap and gently saying her name.

She only wok enough to say one word, "Myans."

Opie held her hand, "We got to get her to the hospital..."

She was in surgery for hours. Jax playing referee between Clay and Opie. When Tara finally came out he was relieved.

"I wish I had better news," she looked Clay in the eye, barely containing the hate, "She suffered damage to her spine that we don't know if we can repair. We grafted the burns on her legs, luckily she won't be able to fee th pain they will cause."

Opie paused in mid-pace, "Her spine? What kind of damage?"

Tara sighed, "We're not sure if there is just swelling of some kind pressing up against the spinal cord or if there is something more serious. She also suffered some head trauma and is in an induced coma right now. All we know now is that she needs time," she hated to see the hurt in Opie's eyes.

Opie scrubbed his face with his hands, nodding. It felt like his whole world was crashing down around him.

Four months passed. Even after they stopped the medically induced coma, she didn't wake up. The did scans and tests, but they couldn't find a reason for it. She had brain activity, but was still sleeping. To months in, Tara discovered something and, though she wanted to tell Opie, she had to tell Clay who could then pass the information on if he chose. He never did.

Once it became obvious, though, she was sure Opie knew. He never said he knew, but she was sure he did. At this point, it felt a lot like they were keeping Corrie alive as an incubator for yet another motherless child Opie would be scarred by. Tara made sure Corrie was well taken care of.Making sure someone worked all her muscles, that she was rolled to avoid skin breakage, and that she received proper nutrition. Clay was there most of the time, which didn't leave much time for Opie. Often, she would find him there in the middle of the night.


It was on one such night that the unthinkable happened.


Slowly, Corrie began to be aware of noises around her. When she felt the tubes on her face and in her nose she woke up, immediately trying to rip them out. The light blinded her and she blinked against it. She was terrified. The last thing she remembered was laying on the side of the road.

Opie had been staring at her near lifeless form for the past several hours. His cheekbones jutting out from weight loss, Jo's hair and beard unkempt, and blackish circles under his eyes from lack of sleep. He held her hand in his like he always did. He jumped slightly as he felt her move.

"Corr? Corrine?!"

She coughed and sputter, the tube down her nose and her throat irritating her. She looked around frantically, seeing Opie and calming some.

"Tube. Out," was all she managed to say.

Opie nodded, hitting the call button, "Okay, just relax...they will take it out soon...god, I thought you'd never wake up."

"How long?" the look on his face scared her.
