Strange Fruit: Dita and Juice August 1965

16-year-old Dita Winston sat down on the field bench and watched as her brother, Opie, and best friend, Alan Bosley do a series in their three a days. She had just got out of the cheerleading practice and was now waiting for her brother to hurry up and finsh. She wanted to get home before Dick Clark announced the top ten for that week; yes, she was a total music junkie.

She smiled when her eyes locked with Alan's. Giving him a small wave before going back to the book she was reading, Brave New World.

Juice walked up to the football field to watch a practice. His school was combining with this one and he wanted to see what he could expect from the new coach. slowly he sauntered into the bleachers finally leaning against the rails in front of a girl reading.

Dita sensed someone else had joined her company and looked up curiously. She blushed at the sight of the tall, built guy in front her with black hair. She leaned to the side a bit and looked at his face. It was certainly not a face she recognized, but that didn't bother her. She cleared her throat, "Um, hi...you know you can sit down...I'm not going to bite."

"Oh,um, thanks," Juice wasn't used to girls like her being nice to him, "My name is Juice, well, it's a nickname but everyone calls me that."

He turned back towards the field, intently watching.

"I came to check out what I'll have to deal with once the schools combine."

Dita held out her hand in front of him, "Dita Winston...most people call me Dee Dee though. My brother, Opie, is number 47." She looked back out and watched with a wince as Alan got tackled. The coach yelling at him to stop staring off into space and get back into the game. She sighed and looked back a Juice, "Oh? You go to Jefferson? Well...welcome." She smiled warmly; she didn't see him as any different than anyone else. Her brother and Alan were definitely on the opposing side though.

He smiled, it would be nice to know someone when he started here. Especially someone who seemed so open minded. He looked out at number 47, he was freakishly tall and pretty muscular. The glare he was giving him made him think he didn't much like him sitting with his sister. He sighed, this school year was going to blow.

"Thanks, though I doubt many share your thoughts. My sis ter is going to be in lots of trouble here, I think."

Dita watched him intently, "What position do you pay? What do you mean your sister may cause lots of trouble?" Her father, Piney, always said she was too nosey.

"Tight end," he replied, taking a moment to think, "My sister doesn't like ignorance and has a loud mouth, we'll put it that way."

Dita smirked, "She sounds like a pistol." Dita was about to say more until she felt a tap on her shoulder. She turned around and saw a less than happy Alan looking back at her.

Alan knew Opie was pissed and didn't want his friend to fly iff the handle. He made his way to the bleachers to take care of the situation.

"Hey, I think you should go wait fir Op at the car."

Dita, completely disregarding Alan's request, smiled at Juice, "Alan, this is Juice. He is Jefferson's tight end. Juice, this is Alan Bosley..."

Juice knew when he wasn't wanted and he didn't want to push things before even getting to be one the field.
"It's ok, Dee," he smiled, "Maybe I'll see you around? I have to go pick up the sister anyway."

Dita watched as Juice walked away before looking up at Alan, her bright green eyes questioning, "What was that all about? He wasn't harming anyone..."

Alan looked at her incredulously, "you don't want to mix with them. I didn't want your brother to get in trouble for taking the spic out."

Dita stood up and looked up at Alan square in the eye, close enough to him that only he could hear, "Alan Marcus Bosley, you ought to be ashamed of yourself. Your mama raised you better than that. He was doing nothing wrong and he seems like a nice person. Of all people, I would have hoped you would judge on character and not by the color of someone's skin."

Alan laughed and patted her arm, "Always gonna be the little sister, huh, Dee?"

He made his way back to the field, istantly telling Opie how it went.

Dita rolled her eyes and marched off to her brother's 1961 SS; half tempted to kick it.

Opie shook his head as he watched her, "She's going to get herself mixed up with wrong crowd. Pop and his free thinking ideals...you know, she's a damn handful, Alan. You really should take her off my hands already."

Alan laughed and patted his best friend's back, "that one is all you, buddy."

He smiled as he walked towards his own car, looking back briefly to shake his head.

Dita was silent on the way home; angry at her brother. Opie can sense her bitterness, "Deet, you best keep away from that spic."

Dita cut her eyes as she whipped around to glare at him, "You need to stop being so damn closed minded, Harry. Daddy always says..."

"Pop is a nutter. You best listen to me."

"Daddy is not a nutter and you are just plain hateful. Juice is nice..."

"Juice!?! What kind of spic name is that?"

Dita was relieved when they pulled into the drive. Without another word, she stormed off into the house and up to her bedroom. The hell with her brother's attitude.

The first day pf combined practice was terrible, everyone hated everyone. Juice stood in t blazing sun and took a drink of water. He sighed as he took a seat on the bench/

Dita had finished her practice early and decided to wait for her brother or Alan to give her a lift to town. She sat down on the bench next to a tired Juice. "Hey,"

Trying to be cool, Juice nodded at her, "Hey."

He stared at his "team", it was a sad sorry day when a bunch of boys couldn't even come together for football.

Dita sighed, watching Alan scowling at Juice from the field, "I take it you had a shoddy day."

He leaned his elbws on his knees and ran a hand over his hair, "You could say that."

Dita sighed, "I don't get it...aren't girls supposed to be the judgemental ones? My squad has been far more accepting to this change than the guys."
