AU Backdarft corrie

She'd planned this in her head on the walk over, she was going to ask him to sit then she would sit beside him and hold his hand and calmly tell him the situation. After she'd told him he would tell her it would be ok and it would be. Instead, she was freaking out.

"Opie," she caressed his face, "I just got back from a Doctor's appointment," she sighed searching for words, "I have Lymphoma."

She felt exhausted just trying to get the words out.

Opie's house

Opie sat there, his smile faltering, "W-what?"

She sat in his lap and looked deeply into his green eyes.

"I have cancer, Ope. They said it might be from being at ground zero. I already filled the prescription they gave me for the new chemo pills. I might need a bone marrow transplant. It's bad, ope," she watched his face and tears spilled over.

Opie shook his head, "No...NO. We'll get a second opinion. I'll pay for all of it. We will fix this, Cor."

She cradled his face and forced him to look at her, "Babe, I don't need a secind opinion. I have it. I already took my first dose of the chemo. Pay for whatever you want, it won't change the fact that my hair is going to fall out, I'm going to be really sick, and I might die."

She hadn't expected this reaction. Somehow his forcefulness in saying it wasn't true made her love him more. The medicine was starting to make her feel terrible, but she was trying to hide it and be strong for him.

Opie looked down for a moment before looking back up, "Marry me."

Eyes wide with shock, she stared at him. She didn't know what to do. Marrying him had always been a thought that brought her joy, but if she died what would it do to him? Tears ran down her face as she realized it may be her only chance.

"Yes,"she sobbed, "yes, Opie, yes."

She kissed his lips gently. The thickness of his short hair felt good against her fingertips. The medicine made her stomach turn. She stood and looked at him, "Bathrooom, where is the bathroom?"

Opie didn't simply point her in the direction, but led her to the bathroom. He scooped her soft hair up and sat beside her as her support. "Starting tonight, you are staying here. No argument."

When she was finally done, she wiped her face with a towel, rinsed her mouth with warm water, the leaned against him. She was glad he wanted her to stay.

"Just don't tell anyone, ok?"

Opie looked at her in shock, "What about your dad, Juice or Dee?"

She sighed, "Dee just found out she was pregnant. I don't want to atreas her. Please ope."

She.scrambled away.from him and began dry heaving.

Opie sighed heavily, "Okay, I won't say anything. Come on, baby, lets get you to bed. I'll get you a bucket, okay?"

Dragging her feet some she nodded. When she made it through his labyrinth of a house to his bedroom she realized she had no clothes here. Making herself quite at home, while Opie looked on, she stripped off her clothes, searched through his, and slipped on his long-sleeved NYFD shirt. Once she settled in his huge bed, not giving a damn how strange it looked, she rolled onto her stomach and inhaled deeply in one of the pillows. It smelled like Irish spring and Crew shampoo. She rolled back over and smiled.

"Ope, you;re going to have to go get my clothes and stuff at some point. I can't go to work in your clothes. Don't think Daddy would like that much," she joked weakly.

She had every intention of returning to work the next day, stubborn as she was.

Opie chuckled weakly, "I'll go later. Get some rest. I love you."

THREE WEEKS LATER


Opie had gotten all her things moved or stored. It took some tome to get used to having a cleaning lady and enough space to house a football team, but it was worth it to be so much a part of his life. she had known he was a good, caring man, but watching him take care of her over the last few weeks had shown her he was basically a saint; at least with her.

Piedmount had been furious when Opie had told him he planned on marrying Corrie and how quickly. The man assumed he'd gotten Corrie pregnant and shed watched as he let the man think just that. It was very possibly the only way to get him to accept the marriage. She was pretty sure most of their friends and family thought she was pregnant because of her constant vomiting. Though it was hard and she was exhausted, she had returned to work. It was the only constant fight she had with Opie; taking leave at work.

As she stood with her father and he'd walked her down the aisle she'd felt like nothing in this world, not even the cancer, would ever be able to get her. As Opie gently placed the ring on her finger she felt like it emanated his love and that she might make it through this after all.

The press crowded around outside the church; New York's disaster sweethearts were getting married.

Once the ceremony was over and all the pictures had been taken, during which she was grateful her hair hadn't fallen out yet, they headed to the reception. Everything was perfect. No one noticed when she chopped the food up and pushed it around her plate, instead of eating it.

Cuddled up to Opie, during their first dance she sighed, "Ope, I'm not sure how much longer I'm going to make it," she wobbled tiredly in his arms, "All the medicine I've taken today, I'm exhausted. "

She felt dead on her feet.

Opie kissed her temple gently,"We could leave. I could ask Dee to get ready to wrap things up." Dita had insisted on coordinating the event.

The room began to spin slightly on the edges of her mind and she groaned. To keep what little she did eat in tact she took some deep breaths while burying her face in his chest. Some people seemed to notice that she was growing paler the longer they stayed and that she seemed to not be feeling well, but so far no one had said anything. Dita, however, had been eyeing her all night.

Mustering all the strength she had she looked up at her husband, "Please do. I can't keep going much longer. The room is spinning."

Opie looked over at Dita, kind of nodding to her as he led Corrie to her chair. He kissed her forehead, "Be right back."

He went over to Dita, who was clearly worried. She looked at him with concern.

Opie sighed, "She isn't feeling well...we are shipping out."

Dita cut her eyes, "What the fuck is going on?"

Opie looked away, "I can't..."

Dita moved close to him, "You will. There is something going on with my sister and you keeping secrets from me isn't going to make me back down. "

Opie sighed, "Later...I will tell you later...please, Dee."

Dita looked over at her sister and nodded, "I'm holding you to your word. I will round people up." She went off and prepared to send her sister and brother-in-law off.

Corrie had seen the confrontation between her sister and her husband. She felt terrible for putting him in this position. She watched as he came back towards her and she started to shake some. Sometimes the nausea would make her break out in a cold sweat, now was one of those times. She knew she should at least wipe off her forehead, but she was so tired she didn't want to.

Not far behind Opie, Dee stalked towards them. She knew that look; her sister was looking for a fight.

Dee went up to her sister, looking at her in desperation, "What the hell is going on, Corrine?"

She sat limply against her chair, "Damn it, Dee, why can't you leave this alone?"

She tried to stand, but plopped back down in her chair. When she did, Dee's look intensified, Corrie knew she wouldn't let it go. She hadn't noticed the hush that had taken over the room or their father and mother staring at them. Grabbing Opie to pull her up to a standing position, she looked Dee dead in the eyes.

"I fucking have cancer!" she screamed, she noticed Opie's father's face as he stood not far from Ope, "Yea, that's right your son married me because I might be dying, asshole."

Dita stood there: hurt, angry, scared, and confused. She shook her head slowly as she pieced all the signs together. "No....NO.....that isn't true...." Tears were welling up in her eyes as she looked at Opie, silently begging him to tell her different, all he could do is look down.

Corrie sighed, heavily, "I'm sorry, it's true. I should have told you, but I didn't want you to worry," she held Opie's hand for balance, "Come over in the next couple of days, we'll talk."

Her legs felt like jello and she wobbled, "Opie, take me home. Please. "

Her eyes begged him silently, by this time tomorrow everyone in the cuty would know about her having cancer. She'd have to face all the pity and the stares like she was going to drop dead right then. Hell, even Opie looked at her that way when he thought she didn't see.

"Take me home."

Opie nodded, ignoring the stares the received as he helped Corrie out to their car.

When they got home she went upstairs, begging Opoe not to follow her, laid down on the bed in her wedding dress, and cried herself to sleep. Later that night she woke in pajamas; one of Opoe's shirts and some yoga pants. She had no idea how she had slept through that. She sighed and rose to use the bathroom. As she looked back at Opie's sleeping form she noticed a clump of her hair tangled in his fingers. Horrorified she looked at her pillow and saw more.
Defiantly, she went into the bathroom, searched for Opie's clippers and began shaving off what was left of her long curly hair.
